Global Markets

(A) Precious Metals

Gold: $4,017.26/oz (-0.18%)

Gold fell 0.18% to $4,017.26/oz as rising oil prices, inflation concerns and Fed tightening expectations pressured bullion.

Gold declined approximately 3.5% this week, while markets priced an 80% probability of December tightening. Elevated interest-rate expectations continued to weigh on sentiment.

Silver: $54.17/oz (-0.78%)

Silver dropped 0.78% to $54.17/oz, pressured by higher interest-rate expectations, inflation risks and weaker industrial demand sentiment.

Brent above $114/bbl reinforced inflation concerns, while 80% odds of December Fed tightening added pressure.

(B) Energy

Brent Crude: $114.32/bbl (+1.02%)

Brent rose 1.02% to $114.32/bbl as Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and escalating Middle East tensions heightened supply concerns.

Saudi Aramco's headquarters evacuation and Libyan production disruptions reinforced supply risks, supporting a third consecutive weekly gain.

(C) FX

DXY: ~101.52

The U.S. Dollar Index hovered near 101.52 after Thursday's 0.08% decline as AI-sector concerns and falling Treasury yields pressured the dollar. U.S. 10-year yields slipped toward 4.95%, weakening rate-hike expectations ahead of the Fed meeting.

USD/JPY: 156.28 (-0.30%)

USD/JPY fell 0.30% to 156.28 as safe-haven demand and declining U.S. yields strengthened the yen. The yen headed for a 1.00% weekly gain, while Japanese inflation above the BOJ's 2% target supported December rate-hike expectations.

EUR/USD: ~1.1220

EUR/USD held near 1.1220 as French fiscal uncertainty and elevated borrowing costs limited euro gains. Dollar weakness offered support, while expectations of an ECB rate hold at 2.50% kept investors cautious.

GBP/USD: ~1.3400

GBP/USD recently gained 0.10% to 1.3400 as UK rate-hike expectations and stronger inflation supported sterling. However, weaker UK retail sales and global risk aversion threatened further gains ahead of the November 5 BoE meeting.

AUD/USD: ~0.7016

AUD/USD held near 0.7016 as Australian rate-hike expectations and a softer U.S. dollar provided support. However, AI-sector volatility and global growth concerns limited gains, while rising oil prices sustained inflation risks.

Volatility

The VIX climbed to 19.03, reflecting heightened market anxiety as AI-sector selloffs, falling U.S. equities and Middle East tensions increased uncertainty ahead of the Federal Reserve meeting.

What Markets Are Watching

1. Federal Reserve Policy, Global PMI Data & Interest-Rate Expectations

Investors are focused on the October 27-28 Federal Reserve meeting, with markets largely expecting unchanged rates and pricing around 80% probability of December tightening. Today's UK retail sales, European flash PMIs and U.S. manufacturing and services data could provide fresh insight into economic growth. Upcoming ECB and Bank of Japan decisions add further uncertainty.

2. Middle East Escalation, Oil Supply Risks & Inflation

Brent climbed 0.50% to $113.75/bbl as renewed Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia increased supply disruption concerns. Saudi Aramco's headquarters evacuation and reduced Libyan oil production heightened regional risks. Sustained energy prices above $110/bbl could reinforce inflation pressures and complicate central bank policy decisions.

3. AI-Sector Selloff, U.S. Treasury Yields & Safe-Haven Demand

U.S. technology shares weakened sharply, pulling the Nasdaq down 2.60% and S&P 500 down 1.21% amid concerns over AI investment spending. U.S. 10-year Treasury yields fell toward 4.97%, supporting demand for the yen and government bonds. Investors are assessing whether earnings growth can justify elevated technology valuations amid persistent geopolitical risks.
